2010 will be the year of anniversaries for the city of Nyíregyháza
The Municipal Stadium will reach 50 years of existence. The last European Championship of Sports organized in Hungary was 20 years ago.
Sports, and especially athletics are mentioned locally and abroad as far back as in the '70s. At the Veterans Olympics Athletics and 15 years ago, Nyíregyháza organized an international athletics competition - The European Athletics Championship for Youth and juniors. In each competition, since 1976, from the one organized in Montréal and the one last year from Beijing, the city had at least one representative. There are to be mentioned athletes like Erdélyi Szabó Ildikó, Bakosi Béla, Petrika Ibolya, Molnár Tamás or, recently, Rakonczai Bea.
The city has engaged to organize the European Veterans Athletics Championship in 2010, not just because of the tradition in athletics that it has, but also for its hospitable spirit and the opening to new horizons and the development of this city. By this event, we aim to get closer the neighboring countries (Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania) in an athletics community and also to promote sports in Eastern Europe.
In this purpose, visitors are expected at the Municipal Stadium with a recently renovated running track and also at the University, situated only 500 m away from the stadium, where teh warming track is waiting for the athlets. The II Stadium is a few kilometers frim the Main Stadium.
In the city there are about 6000 accommodation places and many cultural programs, tourist attractions and a special gastronomy.
The most important sights of the Nyíregyháza being Sóstógyógyfürdő (Sóstó Spa), the town centre and the bush farms. People visiting Nyíregyháza will find a bustling town centre, but at the same time they can enjoy quiet parks, avenues with trees, wonderful statues, intimate cafés, restaurants with terraces, high standard hotels as well as fascinating cultural programmes.
Sóstógyógyfürdő - located about three kilometers away from the town centre - has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hungary in the past few years as it has a wide range of recreational facilities. Its cultural programmes as well as its entertainment facilities have made Nyíregyháza the tourist centre of the region.
The people of Nyíregyháza attach great importance to having a nice, attractive, friendly and safe town, which gives pleasure both to its inhabitants and to visitors.
